Unique karst landscape in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Entlebuch

Lage

Description

The strikingly rugged mountain ridge of the Schrattenfluh runs dominantly through the Entlebuch Biosphere Reserve in Lucerne. Amidst the vegetationless karst landscape there are numerous caves and bizarre rock formations, which together with the silver-grey shimmering Schratten limestone present a unique, extraterrestrial-looking scenario. The Schrattenfluh is one of the largest contiguous cirque fields in the whole of Switzerland (see also Silberen SZ) and very popular with speleologists. With an altitude of 2093 meters, the mountain range offers a sweeping view over the Bernese Oberland, the Entlebuch and Emmental valleys all the way to the Mittelland.
