The university emerged from the theological faculty. Since 1600, there have been courses of study in theology and philosophy in Lucerne. Today, the university comprises the following faculties: Theology, Cultural and Social Sciences, Law, Economics, Health Sciences and Medicine, Behavioural Sciences and Psychology. The building's striking façade structure gives the university a distinctive character.
