Steepest cogwheel train in the world.
Location
Brünigstrasse 2
6053 Alpnachstad
Description
With a gradient of 48%, the rack train from Alpnachstad to Pilatus-Kulm is the steepest in the world. Commissioned in 1889, the train travels through flourishing alpine meadows and striking rock formations and was presented at the World Exhibition in Paris in its first year of operation. An ingenious technology with two horizontally rotating gears enables the railroad to climb such gradients. In 1937, the railroad switched from steam to electronic drive.
