Summary
The Gotthardpass is one of the most important crossings in the entire Alpine region, connecting German-speaking Switzerland with the Italian-speaking part. The area is not only a linguistic border but also a significant watershed (Adriatic / Mediterranean / North Sea). The hospice on the Gotthardpass (municipality of Airolo TI) was founded in 1237 by monks of the Order of Humiliati. It has hosted the likes of Goethe, Balzac, Petrarch and other famous personalities. Due to the high volume of passenger traffic, the Gotthard route was also known as the "Road of Nations". Today, in addition to the mountain pass road which is open in summer, the crossing can be navigated via two railway lines (Gotthard-Basistunnel, Gotthard mountain route) and the Gotthard road tunnel. As such, the Gotthard remains a central passage between Northern and Southern Europe.
