Summary
The pilgrimage site and place of power, Heiligkreuz, is home to a Rococo church built in 1588, which houses a precious 16th-century monstrance and a magnificently colourful high altar. The name of the location first appeared in 1480 and originates from a legend: around 320 AD, Saint Helena is said to have found the Cross of Christ on Golgotha and given a fragment of it to a soldier on his way to France. To verify its authenticity, the piece was tied to a wild ox, which carried it to the present-day site of Heiligkreuz and presented it to the shepherds amidst heavenly light and angelic music.
