The "Schweizerhof", the most famous hotel in Luzern, occupies a prime location overlooking the lake and mountains. This prestigious hotel complex, dating back to 1845, originates from the 19th-century heyday of Swiss tourism. Throughout its eventful history, the late-classicist palace with its two annexes and the row of palms in front of the portico has hosted countless celebrities, including Mark Twain, Queen Elizabeth II, Churchill and Neil Armstrong. Leo Tolstoy immortalised the "Schweizerhof" in his short story "Lucerne". Today, the 5-star establishment is also a highly popular venue for festivals, Fasnacht, panel discussions and other major events.
