Kapellbrücke - Wasserturm

Summary

The Kapellbrücke with its Wasserturm is not only the oldest and second-longest covered wooden bridge in Europe, but also the most photographed monument in Switzerland. It was built in 1365 as part of the city's fortifications. The bridge features triangular pediment paintings that depict the history of Luzern. Most of these fell victim to the major fire on the bridge in 1993. The Wasserturm belonging to the bridge was built around 1300. It served, among other things, as a dungeon, torture chamber and treasury. Today, the tower houses the club premises of the Artillerieverein. The tower can be visited on request or on specific days.
