Summary
The world-famous Kloster Einsiedeln is the most significant Baroque building in Switzerland and the country's most visited place of pilgrimage. Founded in 934, the Benedictine abbey is located on a high plateau at over 800 metres. It traces its origins back to Saint Meinrad, who is said to have built a chapel on this site. The current monastery was constructed in three stages between 1674 and 1735. The Chapel of Grace with its Black Madonna is particularly popular with visitors. The large monastery square serves as the venue for the "Einsiedler Welttheater", performed against the monumental facade of the abbey.
