Summary
The strikingly jagged mountain ridge of the Schrattenfluh dominates the Luzern UNESCO Biosphärenreservat Entlebuch. In the midst of the vegetation-free karst landscape, there are numerous caves and bizarre rock formations which, together with the shimmering silver-grey Schrattenkalk limestone, present a unique, extraterrestrial-looking scenario. The Schrattenfluh is one of the largest contiguous limestone pavements in the whole of Switzerland (see also Silberen SZ) and is very popular with cavers. Reaching a height of 2093 metres, the mountain range offers sweeping views across the Berner Oberland, the Entlebuch and Emmental through to the Mittelland.
