The Film Commission Lucerne & Central Switzerland pursues three objectives with its work. It supports the promotion of Central Switzerland as a location, tourism and local business. It promotes the regional creative industry and strengthens the population's identification with their region.
When a film production comes to Central Switzerland, an SME temporarily operates in the region. At the end of summer 2022, an Italian-Swiss production filmed for around five days on Lake Lucerne. The cast and crew consisted of about 100 people who temporarily lived in Luzern. In this short time, the production invested around 350,000 francs in accommodation, food, rentals, etc. Another production, which filmed mainly in Meggen and Luzern with slightly fewer people, also invested over 300,000 francs. Welcome investments in tourism and local business!
Production companies rarely arrive in the region with a full crew. They hire the remaining staff locally: technical film specialists or helpers on set. This brings employment to the regional film industry.
Finally, the resulting film or new television series generates interest in the region where the production took place. Locals are generally proud that their region or home town is showcased on film. For others, the moving images encourage them to visit the city or landscape shown. This effect should not be underestimated. A striking example from the Bernese Oberland: the Bond film "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" was partly shot on the Schilthorn. As a result, many people from near and far visit this mountain. For 80 per cent of all visitors, this 1969 film is the reason. A further effect of the work of a Film Commission, which supports productions in the region, offers or procures the necessary services, and makes it attractive for film productions to shoot in its region.
Film work is economic promotion and brings welcome value added, supports and creates jobs, and nurtures regional filmmaking.
