On 19 February, Frauke Finsterwalder (director) and the producers from Germany, Austria and Switzerland presented “Sisi & ich” to a large audience as part of the 73rd Berlinale. The film will be released in cinemas in Germany and Switzerland from 30 March.
“A feast for the eyes at the Berlinale: Frauke Finsterwalder's film ‘Sisi & Ich’ is a romance – and a hymn to idleness and the south,” writes Claudius Seidl in the FAZ. Large parts of this feast were created in Switzerland, at St. Charles-Hall in Meggen near Luzern and on the shores of Lake Lucerne in the city of Luzern.
St. Charles Hall has become a popular filming location in recent years. Important scenes for productions such as “*Gotthard” (CH, DE, A, 2016), “Frieden” (CH, DE, FR, 2020), “Das Netz” (DE, 2022), “Der Scheich” (DE, 2022) and “Sisi & ich” (DE, CH, A, 2023) were filmed in the 1895 villa. In the magnificent building overlooking the lake and mountains, scenes for the Sisi film were produced that historically took place in Bad Kissingen, among other locations.
The eccentric Empress was assassinated on 10 September 1898 on the lakeside promenade in Geneva. Filming at the original location was no longer possible due to urban development. The director and production therefore opted for Luzern. Here, the lakeside promenade still looks as it did at the end of the 19th century. In addition, Luzern offers ideal conditions for filming.
